FIGHTING FOR SUNBURY

State of Our City

February 28th, 2013

Sunbury PA, February 27th, 2013

End of an Era?

Speaking at the Degenstein Community Library, and to a small audience who received his address politely rather than enthusiastically, Mayor Persing seemed somewhat ill at ease, lacking his customary ebullience and rushing his presentation. Faced with a strong opponent, Julie Brosius, for this year’s Republican nomination, there is no guarantee that he will be making this address again. At the end he hurriedly ducked off the platform and did not take questions.

“Take it any way you want” – Persing

Sunbury PA – Monday February 25th 2013

“You can take whatever we did here tonight any way you want!” With these lines Mayor Persing arrogantly dismissed protests from members of PANDA (People against the NDAA) after passing a lukewarm resolution, more in the nature of a whitewash than a meaningful statement of intent.

NDAA – Freedoms Threatened

Time to Uphold Our Constitution

Quiggle

by Constable Ed Quiggle, Sunbury PA 9th Ward

The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), is a bill which is passed annually, primarily to appropriate funds for the military. However, the NDAA for Fiscal Year 2012 included provisions that allow the President to order people on American soil, including American citizens, to be held indefinitely without charge or trial. These provisions, Sections 1021 and 1022, remove the Constitution and impose the law of war on people, violating liberties that have been protected since the Magna Carta. NDAA 2012, which was signed by President Obama on New Year’s Eve, 2011,  is in direct conflict with a large portion of the Bill of Rights of the US Constitution.

Councilman Joe Bartello

The Sunbury PA City Fire Chief wants to charge you to put your house fire out. But the Daily Item didn’t think that was important enough to tell you about it.

At the last City Council meeting, the chief presented a new ordinance to council establishing Sunbury Fire Department emergency response billing procedures. Under this new ordinance the citizens would be charged a standard emergency response fee of $500.00 to include all time up to the first two hours spent on the response.

City Facing its Greatest Challenge

Sunbury PA is facing perhaps its greatest challenge since the threat to Fort Augusta during the French and Indian Wars back in the 18th century.

This time it’s not from the attentions of fiercely combative Native Americans but from a sea of chemical filth in the form of fracking waste, both liquid and solid, which could soon be flowing into the former Celotex site. Owner John Moran is proposing to sub-let part of the site to Clean Harbors who intend to initially import 1000 tons (55 truckloads) per day of waste for processing and subsequent trans-shipment on the railroad. Even these horrendous quantities will be increased in the longer term.
