This letter was originally sent to the Daily Item by a Turbotville resident, in response to a recent article by Dr. John Pagana of Sunbury. However, for reasons best known to themselves, our local newspaper did not publish it. In the interests of furthering the public debate on this important topic, and with the permission of the writer, we are publishing it here instead.
I am the mother of a child with a severe form of epilepsy called Lennox Gastaut syndrome. We need to have the opportunity to try medical marijuana as a control for his seizures as soon as possible, since he always has a risk of death from his multiple mixed types of seizures. After some seizures, I have watched my son stop breathing and turn blue. He is faithfully taking his prescribed medications and is on the Ketogenic diet. I am always searching for what else I could possible do to prevent a bad outcome from occurring. We have already tried 8 other medications without success.
I would like to comment on Dr Pagana’s letter. I do not feel that there should be any further delays in providing medical marijuana by researching it further. All his points are invalid in our case because my sons seizures have caused the problems addressed NOT marijuana!.

Joe Bartello wants to have term limits on our city officials. I think that would be GREAT. That is just like our Congressmen & Senators, they are in for so long they think we work for them, and they can do whatever they want. That is happening in Sunbury! Persing is running for his 6th term! We are not supposed to question anything!
They say the houses they are STEALING from people have not paid the taxes and have deserted them. I know of one that had the taxes and anything else that needed paying, PAID! The grass was kept mowed, and the owner had just gotten a good job and was ready to start fixing it up. But a certain councilman needed parking for his tenants. The Judge suggested they be given more time but the “city lawyer” (how do we fire him?) said NO! So they tore it down. How many others has this happened to?
Please when you vote, lets get new people elected. I think Joe would make a good mayor, Drew Bingaman for council, and anybody else that is against Persing!

From Jan Cary, Florida
I accidentally found your blog. I left the city in 1972 and am shocked at what I have read in your blog! I cannot believe how things have changed. But some things don’t surprise me and in fact answer a few questions.
I am presently a 30+ year law enforcement officer, former elected Sheriff of the 2nd largest county in New Mexico, a department that is a full service law enforcement agency, former chief of police in Fort Valley, Georgia and with extensive police management and budget experience. I am a graduate of the FBI National Academy.
I have applied for the last 2 Chief’s positions, wanting to return and make a contribution back to the community. In seeing the current state of affairs I now know why I never even received a response, let alone an interview.
Good luck at keeping people honest and trying to make a difference.

Mayor David Persing
City of Sunbury, 225 Market St, Sunbury, PA 17801
Dear Mayor Persing:
After reading the article on September 10, 2013, in “The Daily Item” and viewing the video of the Sunbury City Council meeting, I have a few questions that need to be clarified.
You were asked if existing devices would be “Grandfathered” in. There was no mention of your decision in the video recording nor was there any mention in The Daily Item article on what decision was reached on “Grandfathering”. Will there be any “Grandfathering” of existing fire pits? When the ordinance that outlawed the use of “burn barrels” was passed, there was no “grandfathering” for existing burn barrels. What would be the point of trying to stop the use of these items if people could simply be grandfathered in? Would the “grandfathering” ignore the homemade devices, the distance from structures, or other equally important items?

As a tax-paying citizen in the City of Sunbury, I have a major complaint to raise with Mayor Persing and the Code Officers who are about to saddle unsuspecting citizens with a HEALTH PROBLEM that may continue to exist for future generations.
The last meeting with Mayor Persing presiding had one goal. It was to obtain feedback from citizens of Sunbury who attended the meeting, asked their opinion in developing a NEW CITY CODE for allowing people to burn wood in their yard.

Please explain to me the following:
The city council members are voted into office, so how can “someone” in the city government change the lock on a council member’s office to prevent him from doing his job?
I can only speak for myself, but this smacks of an attempt of a person trying to create a totalitarian government in the City of Sunbury.
Are we as voting citizens of this city going to allow this unlawful behavior to continue?
I, for one will NOT!

A Response to Sunbury City Council from PANDA
On January 28th, PANDA Pennsylvania, members from groups such as the Susquehanna Valley Liberty Alliance, Oath Keepers, and the ACLU, along with several citizens from the city of Sunbury, approached the City of Sunbury, PA with legislation designed to interpose against Sections 1021 and 1022 of the 2012 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).
