No Show from Politicians
Some of us were lucky enough to attend the Democracy School, held February 21/22 at Apfelbaum Hall, the Business and Communications Center for Susquehanna University, and sponsored by our friends at Shale Justice. Presented by Chad Nicholson and Ben Price of the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund (CELDF) the course began on a Friday evening and then ran for 7 hours on Saturday, including a break for a delicious lunch.

Over 20 people came along and they certainly comprised an eclectic bunch, ranging from college professors to senior citizens and from farmers to journalists to environmentalists. All were eager to learn about the democratic background and history of our country.

Persing’s Continuing Membership Questioned.
Recent news that the mayor of Poughkeepsie NY, along with many others, has resigned from the Michael Bloomberg group, “Mayors Against Illegal Guns” (MAIG), raises once again the issue of the continuing membership and support for this group by our own Mayor Persing.

Poughkeepsie Mayor John Tkazyik, in a recent statement, blew the whistle about the group’s true intentions – total disarmament of all law-abiding gun owners.
“Under the guise of helping mayors facing a crime and drug epidemic, MAIG intended to promote confiscation of guns from law-abiding citizens,” Tkazyik said, confirming what many already suspected about the group.

Hear Joe Bartello, Next Mayor of Sunbury
The Restore the Fourth rally, scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm Saturday at Merle Phillips Park, Front and Market Streets, Sunbury, aims to end all forms of unconstitutional surveillance of digital communications currently being carried out by the US Government.
The Fourth Amendment (Amendment IV) to the United States Constitution is the part of the Bill of Rights which guarantees individual privacy, prohibits unreasonable searches and seizures and requires any warrant to be judicially sanctioned and supported by probable cause.
This Rally is about your liberties. If you value them then please come along and support its objectives.

On Friday July 12th Congressman Lou Barletta came to Sunbury for a tour of the Sunbury Textile Mills and to hold a press conference. Members from PANDA Pennsylvania, the Sunbury PANDA chapter, and the Susquehanna Valley Liberty Alliance participated in a rally against Rep. Lou Barletta’s support for the NDAA and its indefinite detention provisions, and for apparently ignoring the City of Sunbury’s recent resolution which asked Rep. Barletta to support legislation to remove indefinite detention from the NDAA.
In fact Rep. Barletta voted against the Smith-Gibson Amendment, a piece of legislation that would have removed the indefinite detention provisions from the NDAA, even after he had been given the Sunbury NDAA resolution and hearing his constituents demands to repeal NDAA.

Resolution Tabled at City Meeting
By Drew Bingaman
Prospective City Councilman, Sunbury
Chair Legislative Action Committee, Libertarian Party of Pennsylvania
At the May 14th Sunbury Council meeting, Mayor Persing proved once again to be squishy on our rights. When the second amendment resolution was brought up, he hadn’t read it. In fact, he didn’t even acknowledge that he had received it.
Councilman Snyder stated that it was sent out on April, 24. Councilman Snyder then proceeded to read the complete resolution to all in attendance; even then, the Mayor was still not ready to support it.
He says he supports gun rights… but his actions speak louder. He is hesitant on this resolution; he is a member of the very anti-gun group Mayors Against Illegal Guns!

Persing – Bloomberg’s Mini Me
Mayor Bloomberg and Mini Me
As mentioned previously in these pages – Persing Against Guns – Mayor Persing is a member of Michael Bloomberg’s group – Mayors Against Illegal Guns. This is a front for Bloomberg to lobby Congress to oppose pro-gun reforms and to support new federal gun control restrictions.
Following public pressure, 15 PA-based mayors have quit this organization since September. However, non gun owner Persing seems determined to resist all calls for him to resign.

A Response to Sunbury City Council from PANDA
On January 28th, PANDA Pennsylvania, members from groups such as the Susquehanna Valley Liberty Alliance, Oath Keepers, and the ACLU, along with several citizens from the city of Sunbury, approached the City of Sunbury, PA with legislation designed to interpose against Sections 1021 and 1022 of the 2012 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

“Take it any way you want” – Persing
Sunbury PA – Monday February 25th 2013
“You can take whatever we did here tonight any way you want!” With these lines Mayor Persing arrogantly dismissed protests from members of PANDA (People against the NDAA) after passing a lukewarm resolution, more in the nature of a whitewash than a meaningful statement of intent.

Time to Uphold Our Constitution
by Constable Ed Quiggle, Sunbury PA 9th Ward
The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), is a bill which is passed annually, primarily to appropriate funds for the military. However, the NDAA for Fiscal Year 2012 included provisions that allow the President to order people on American soil, including American citizens, to be held indefinitely without charge or trial. These provisions, Sections 1021 and 1022, remove the Constitution and impose the law of war on people, violating liberties that have been protected since the Magna Carta. NDAA 2012, which was signed by President Obama on New Year’s Eve, 2011, is in direct conflict with a large portion of the Bill of Rights of the US Constitution.
