Disabled Afro-American Woman Threatened at City Meeting

March 15th, 2014

“We’ll take away your parking space and have you arrested!” – Reichner

Sunbury PA senior citizen Ms. Regina Russell, despite her disabilities, is a regular attendee at meetings of the city council. She is actively concerned about public safety issues and has volunteered to be the voice of people in her local community – people who are themselves afraid to speak up, attend meetings and file lawful complaints because of the ever present threat of retaliation.

Regina Russell needs to use a Walker to get to and from her vehicle.

Issues raised by Regina are regularly stonewalled by an administration who regard city code enforcement as discretionary and not mandatory – that they can pick and choose which regulations to enforce, and when, depending on whom the complaint is made against and their influence and standing within the community.

Mystery of the Disappearing Mayor

February 20th, 2014

Where is Dave Persing when the City Needs Him?

Mayor David Persing of Sunbury has disappeared from view at at time when he should be defending his city - Sunbury PA - from the feeding frenzy of the world's media over the "Craigs List Killers".

“They’ll never find me down here!”

The world’s media are laying siege to Sunbury. For the past few days they have been engaged in a feeding frenzy stirred up by a local reporter, and the claimed revelations of his exclusive Friday night interview with “Craig’s List Killer”, Miranda Barbour, in Northumberland County Jail.

Everyone from Dr. Phil to Fox News wants a piece of the action and to find a different news angle on the lurid details. They want to speak to the reporter, to the prison warden and to police chief, Steve Mazzeo. Above all they want to learn more about the young accused and her grizzly list of alleged murder victims – “I stopped counting when I got to 22!”

Bloomberg Group Backs Gun Confiscation

February 16th, 2014

Persing’s Continuing Membership Questioned.

Recent news that the mayor of Poughkeepsie NY, along with many others, has resigned from the Michael Bloomberg group, “Mayors Against Illegal Guns” (MAIG), raises once again the issue of the continuing membership and support for this group by our own Mayor Persing.

Poughkeepsie Mayor John Tkazyik, in a recent statement, blew the whistle about the group’s true intentions – total disarmament of all law-abiding gun owners.

“Under the guise of helping mayors facing a crime and drug epidemic, MAIG intended to promote confiscation of guns from law-abiding citizens,” Tkazyik said, confirming what many already suspected about the group.

Coming Soon – The Sunbury American

February 10th, 2014

For the first time since the 1800’s there will be a second newspaper in Sunbury, PA. Joe Bartello is the publisher and, along with his daughter and editor, Britani, is the driving force behind the re-launch of The Sunbury American – initially a monthly newspaper to be distributed free of charge from local businesses throughout the area.

As they see it, the American’s mission will be to provide an alternative news source to Sunbury and its surrounding locales in a way calculated to promote a sense of pride and community in the citizens. Its content will give readers the facts and knowledge needed to develop their personal opinions, analyze the actions of their elected representatives, and empower them in the protection of their freedoms and liberties.

The Sunbury Camera Debacle Rumbles On

The controversy surrounding Sunbury’s troubled security camera system continues to rumble on this week. There are still far more questions than answers.

Sunbury security cameras now all over the city

Big Brother – but is he even Looking?

At last week’s meeting of the City Council (January 13th 2014), Mayor Persing, closely questioned by audience member Mr. Drake Saxton, gave a master class in the art of obfuscation. Representing Not The Item, Mr. Saxton attempted repeatedly to disentangle fact from fiction, in a situation which is rapidly descending into the realms of farce.

Rick Shoch Rescues Records

January 14th, 2014

Commissioner Rick Shoch

Commissioner Shoch

Amazing news just received from Commissioner Rick Shoch. He has been working hard behind the scenes to help rescue the Northumberland County historical records, currently stored under very damp and unsatisfactory conditions in the courthouse basement.

Today he has secured promises of funding worth $1 million from the Degenstein Foundation including the provision of a building owned by them in the 300 block of Market St. and its adaptation for its new use. Additional funding will be required to cover day to day expenses, heating, staffing, etc., but Rick Shoch is confident that this will be forthcoming also.

Medical Marijuana – Letter to the Editor

January 6th, 2014

This letter was originally sent to the Daily Item by a Turbotville resident, in response to a recent article by Dr. John Pagana of Sunbury. However, for reasons best known to themselves, our local newspaper did not publish it. In the interests of furthering the public debate on this important topic, and with the permission of the writer, we are publishing it here instead.

I am the mother of a child with a severe form of epilepsy called Lennox Gastaut syndrome. We need to have the opportunity to try medical marijuana as a control for his seizures as soon as possible, since he always has a risk of death from his multiple mixed types of seizures. After some seizures, I have watched my son stop breathing and turn blue. He is faithfully taking his prescribed medications and is on the Ketogenic diet. I am always searching for what else I could possible do to prevent a bad outcome from occurring. We have already tried 8 other medications without success.

I would like to comment on Dr Pagana’s letter. I do not feel that there should be any further delays in providing medical marijuana by researching it further. All his points are invalid in our case because my sons seizures have caused the problems addressed NOT marijuana!.

We’re Back

January 4th, 2014

Two simple words calculated to strike fear and trepidation in the hearts of corrupt politicians throughout the fair city of Sunbury, as we continue to expose to the full glare of publicity the events surrounding City Hall. We are certainly not in the business of civic spin doctoring – the editor and his staff at the Daily Item are more than capable of pulling the wool over the eyes of the local populace without any assistance from us.

The new Persing Administration wasted no time in signaling its intent to emulate its predecessor, with scant regard for what could be considered to be the best interests of our community and, in doing so, displaying exactly the same penchant for incompetence, stupidity and corruption. It began on election night with Persing’s notorious “taking out the garbage” victory speech during which, sounding more like North Korean leader Kim Jong-un than the Mayor of Sunbury, he crudely threatened the very foundations of local democracy by stating his intent to remove any and all opposition to his evil regime.

Mismanagement puts City Workers at Risk

November 22nd, 2013

Lack of Training threatens Safety

Photographs taken on the morning of Wednesday 20th November by a concerned citizen show a serious and potentially life-threatening situation involving the City Department of Public Works – director Councilman Kevin Troup.

City workers imperilled by dangerous working practices.

Danger – Men at Work

Workers can be clearly seen, in flagrant violation of OSHA safety regulations, standing in a front loader bucket hanging garlands from lampposts. Why is this so dangerous? If the machine’s engine stalled, or simply ran out of fuel, the hydraulic pressure would fail instantly, and the heavy bucket would fall like a stone, throwing anyone within out onto the road. It could also do some serious damage to any vehicles parked underneath where they were working.
